Shinyalu MP Fredrick Ikana has fired a warning to Kenyan youths against being recruited into political violence, as he unveiled the construction of a modern classroom block at Handidi Primary School.

The new eight-classroom block brings to 17 the number of one-storey classroom blocks delivered under Ikana’s administration, translating to 136 modern classrooms across Shinyalu.

“This is a bold investment in our children, our schools and the future of Shinyalu. We will continue working to ensure our children have clean, secure and conducive learning environments,” Ikana said.

The MP said his administration had also delivered more than 240 other classrooms through deliberate renovation programmes, transforming learning spaces in schools across the constituency.

According to Ikana, the investment in classrooms is part of a broader effort to provide pupils with safe and conducive environments while laying a strong foundation for the future of Shinyalu.

He said the focus on education was informed by the need to give children better opportunities to succeed, noting that quality learning facilities remain an important component of education.

But beyond education, Ikana used the occasion to address what he termed the growing culture of political goonism in the country. The MP warned that youths risked being exploited by politicians who could use them to cause chaos, destroy property or attack political opponents. He urged young people to reject political violence and instead participate in politics through democratic and peaceful means.

“Youths, don’t be used as goons to embrace or kill someone. Be democratic and promote peace,” Ikana said.

Ikana said young people should remain focused on building their future instead of allowing themselves to be used by politicians pursuing personal interests.

He cautioned that political violence could undermine peace and security while destroying opportunities for ordinary Kenyans. The MP’s remarks come at a time when political temperatures are gradually rising ahead of the 2027 General Election, with leaders across the country increasingly calling for peaceful political competition.

Ikana was joined at Handidi Primary School by Bungoma Governor Lusaka, Kiminini MP Kakai Bisau, former Kakamega Governor Ayub Savula and other leaders. The leaders reiterated their commitment to working together on development initiatives, with education among the key areas receiving attention.

For Ikana, the 136 modern classrooms and more than 240 renovated classrooms represent a significant investment in Shinyalu’s education sector, while his warning to youths signals his call for politics that prioritises development and peace over confrontation.
