Likuyani MP Innocent Mugabe has launched a fierce attack on former President Uhuru Kenyatta, accusing his administration of presiding over the collapse of industries in Western Kenya and questioning his continued involvement in active politics.

Speaking during a boda boda and women empowerment programme in Butere Sub-County, a function led by Butere MP Tindi Mwale, Mugabe claimed that Western Kenya’s industries were sold during Uhuru’s tenure, with the sugar sector among those he said suffered under the former administration.

Mugabe specifically linked Uhuru to the collapse of Western sugar mills, arguing that the former President should take responsibility for what he described as an industrial mess that the current administration of President William Ruto is attempting to address.

The Likuyani MP also accused Uhuru of continuing to sponsor political activities involving former allies of the Jubilee administration, including Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna.

“Uhuru Kenyatta should retire peacefully instead of remaining active in politics and sponsoring people who are sabotaging the Broad-Based Government,” Mugabe said.

Mugabe further claimed that the economic challenges facing Western Kenya were partly inherited from the previous administration, saying the Ruto government is now working to revive the region’s economic prospects.

Turning his attention to President Ruto, the MP praised the administration for infrastructure projects that he said would open up Western Kenya to greater economic opportunities.

He cited the ongoing Maai Mahiu–Rironi road project, arguing that improved road connectivity would strengthen trade, transport and investment across the region.

Mugabe urged Western Kenya residents to support Ruto’s bid for a second term, arguing that the President was delivering on development promises made to Kenyans.

The MP’s remarks come as political temperatures continue to rise ahead of the 2027 General Election, with leaders in Western Kenya increasingly taking positions on the competing political alliances seeking support in the region.

The Butere empowerment event brought together women and boda boda operators, with leaders allied to the Ruto administration using the platform to highlight government programmes and rally grassroots support.
