FIPS Africa has joined the Government of Makueni County and other partners in stepping up preparedness ahead of the anticipated long rains, with stakeholders calling for early action and coordinated response to protect communities and farmers.
FIPS Africa participated in a County Steering Group (CSG) preparedness meeting convened by the county government to review measures needed ahead of forecasts indicating above-average rainfall.
The meeting was officially opened by Makueni Governor Mutula Kilonzo Junior, who called for urgent preparations and closer coordination among government departments, development partners and communities.
Stakeholders from Agriculture, Disaster Management, Health, Education, Water, Sanitation and Environment, the Meteorological Department and other agencies discussed measures to minimise the impact of heavy rains.Key areas of focus included early warning and communication, climate-smart agriculture, post-harvest loss reduction, drainage, environmental management and emergency response.
Participants also reviewed ways of supporting communities living in identified hotspot areas and ensuring essential services remain accessible during the rainy season.
For farmers, the preparedness measures are expected to help reduce losses associated with flooding, crop damage and other disruptions caused by heavy rainfall.FIPS Africa emphasised the importance of bringing different actors together to ensure farmers receive timely information and practical support.

“Farmers are better supported when county departments, extension systems, development partners and communities plan and act together,” FIPS Africa said.
The organisation noted that stronger coordination can help ensure early warnings and relevant agricultural information reach farmers before and during emergencies.The meeting forms part of ongoing efforts by Makueni County and its partners to strengthen preparedness and build resilience among communities ahead of the long rains.
