Lake Victoria North Water Works Development Agency (LVNWWDA) Chief Executive Officer Joel Wamalwa has led the launch of a major water project at Elukanji Primary School in Khwisero Subcounty aimed at expanding access to clean, reliable and sustainable water for residents.

Wamalwa presided over the groundbreaking ceremony for the Elukanji Spring Protection and Water Supply Project, which will see the local water source protected and new infrastructure developed to improve water storage and distribution.

“This project is an important step towards ensuring that communities in Elukanji have access to safe, reliable and sustainable water,” Wamalwa said.

The project will include construction of a 100 cubic-metre masonry sump, designed to enhance water storage capacity while protecting the Elukanji spring.The planned works will further involve installation of a submersible pump and solar-hybrid system, an elevated storage tank, communal water points and a distribution pipeline to extend reliable water services to the surrounding community.

A borehole will also be developed at Elukanji Primary School, providing an additional source of water for the institution and the wider community.Water kiosks will be established outside the school, enabling residents and pupils to access clean water conveniently.

The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by COTU Secretary-General Francis Atwoli and Khwisero Member of Parliament Christopher Aseka, alongside LVNWWDA leadership led by Joel Wamalwa and Director Abraham Cheruiyot.

The Agency’s technical team was led by Director of Technical Infrastructure and Development Eng. Christopher Bwire, who provided technical guidance on the planned infrastructure and its expected role in strengthening water service delivery.

“We are committed to developing water infrastructure that responds directly to the needs of our communities and ensures that available water resources are protected and sustainably utilised,” the MP and LVNWWDA leadership reiterated.

The use of a solar-hybrid system is expected to incorporate renewable energy into the water supply system while supporting sustainable operations.Once completed, the Elukanji project is expected to strengthen the use of local water resources, increase water storage and distribution capacity and improve access to safe and reliable water for residents.
