Western Regional Commissioner Allan Machari has directed government administrators in Kakamega County to tighten service delivery, improve accountability and strengthen coordination as the national government accelerates development programmes across the region.
Speaking during a meeting with government officials in Kakamega, the Regional Commissioner said administrators must address challenges affecting the effective delivery of government services, including staff shortages and poor coordination between departments.
Machari called for greater sharing of human resource expertise among government offices to ensure critical departments do not remain understaffed while other offices have excess capacity. He said government agencies should work together and explore ways of deploying available personnel to areas experiencing acute shortages. The RC also called for closer monitoring of officers’ time management and attendance, warning that government services can only improve when public servants remain committed to their responsibilities.
He further urged administrators to intensify efforts to reduce crime and regularly monitor security statistics to establish whether interventions being implemented are producing the desired results.
“We must be able to monitor attendance, time management and crime statistics so that we can measure the impact of our interventions,” the meeting was told.
The meeting also reviewed progress of the government’s Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA), particularly programmes under the housing and settlement pillar in Kakamega County.According to the update presented during the meeting, 13 markets are currently under construction, five are at the procurement stage while another 10 have been planned.

The government has also completed 5,250 market units, providing traders with improved spaces to conduct their businesses. On affordable housing, officials reported that 220 affordable housing units have already been completed, while thousands of additional units are either at procurement or planning stages.
The projects are part of the government’s wider plan to improve access to affordable housing, create economic opportunities and transform urban settlements.Macharia urged government officials to take the responsibility of communicating the progress directly to residents, saying many Kenyans need accurate information about government programmes being implemented in their communities.
He said administrators should not wait for residents to seek information but should proactively explain ongoing projects, their benefits and how citizens can participate or access opportunities created by the programmes. The Commissioner stressed that effective communication would help counter misinformation while ensuring residents understand the impact of government investments in their respective areas.
The meeting brought together government officials to assess administrative challenges, review development projects and strengthen coordination of national government programmes in Kakamega. The RC said continued monitoring and collaboration among government departments would be critical in ensuring that development projects are completed on time and deliver the intended benefits to residents.
