The Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) and the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) in Samburu County have issued a seven-day notice to the government, threatening to paralyse learning across the county following the death of a Junior Secondary School teacher under unclear circumstances.
The unions said they would mobilise teachers for demonstrations and an industrial strike if the government fails to take action over the killing of the teacher, identified as Mark Dancun Lemaramba.
Speaking to the media on Tuesday, August 25, union representatives expressed concern over the circumstances surrounding Lemaramba’s death, demanding swift investigations and justice for the teacher.
According to the unions, Lemaramba was teaching at a school in Samburu East when he was allegedly killed by unknown individuals. The suspects reportedly remain at large.
The teachers’ unions said they were giving the government seven days to address their concerns and ensure that those responsible for the teacher’s death are brought to justice.
The unions warned that failure to act within the notice period would trigger demonstrations and an industrial strike, potentially disrupting learning in schools across Samburu County.

The incident has raised concerns among teachers over their safety, particularly those working in areas considered vulnerable or difficult to access. The unions called on security agencies to intensify investigations into the killing and provide answers to Lemaramba’s family, colleagues and the wider teaching fraternity.
They maintained that teachers should be able to perform their duties without fear for their lives and urged the government to treat the matter with urgency. The seven-day notice now puts pressure on the government and security agencies to establish what happened to Lemaramba and bring the perpetrators to account before teachers take industrial action.
